LOVING it

We are aiming to move within the next two weeks, and so much changes each day at the HWCV. Soon, I will start posting whole room "reveals," but for now, here are some updates from the past couple of weeks that I am loving.

The master bath 

Our master bath may be one of my favorite rooms in the house!  I am really obsessed with this shower.  The shower heads will be installed soon!

GIANT vanity!  I can't wait to show you all the hammered copper mirrors I selected for this space.  

A peek into our master closet.  This is the same color green as the pictures above, but it looks so different in this picture.  And I am not sure any of these pictures actually capture the color.  

Kitchen

Our countertops were installed this week.  I am swooning over them!

  

Furniture

I've been painting furniture for Abby's bedroom.  I love this color combination!

Hardwoods

Hardwood floors should last us for the rest of our lives, so it is a daunting task to select a color, plank size, etc.  We chose "walnut hickory" from Lumber Liquidators.  It isn't a trendy wide plank, handscraped wood, and I am sure it isn't their current best seller.  But it has a timeless quality that I love.  It is hard to find a lighter tone without having red undertones.  And I prefer the grain pattern of hickory to oak.  I can't wait to get the furnishing elements in this room.  It's kind of drab with beige walls and brown floors.  But I am hopeful it will be wonderful once we get the furniture, curtains, rugs, and other elements in there.

Gonna Need a New Name Soon

Soon the HWCV will be HOME!  And though it will no longer be the "House With Cat Vomit," I am considering keeping the acronym.  It has become such a big part of my lexicon that my phone places it on the suggestion bar when I start typing H.

Now I find myself driving along and pondering new names for the HWCV.  The following have been ruled out by me (or vetoed by my sane husband.)

• House with carnivorous velociraptors
• Hot white cheesy Veleeta
• Hoards of wild crazy vagabonds
• Heaps of white crunchy vegetables
• Honey where's the cold vodka

Kitchen Cabinets and Interior Paint

Our kitchen cabinets have been installed.  We still need to have the trim completed, but all of the cabinets are in the right place!

Here is a view from the living room:

We will have a 4' seating area under the island counter in front of that area with the shallow cabinets

Microwave will be in the island.

We went with a white shaker style cabinet from Kraftmaid.  It was a little different than what I originally had in mind, but I am really happy with how it looks.  And we have so much space!  The island is 4'x8'!  

You can also kind of see the wall color for the kitchen, dining, living, entry.  It is Sherwin-Williams Kilim Beige.  It's not an exciting color, but it is neutral, warm, and cozy, and I think our new furniture and accents will work really well with it. Here you can kind of see it in the entry.  

Here is the color for the laundry room and powder room.  Sherwin-Williams Escape Gray.

And the girl's bathroom and one of the bedrooms is Sherwin-Williams Pink Phenomenon.

This is the girl's bathroom with the vanity installed!  Hopefully having 2 sinks will improve our teenage years.

Most of the other interior painting has been completed, but I don't have updated pictures.  I will try to post some soon.  

Limping along

I'm overdue on an update!  

Drywall is making slow but steady progress.  Sometimes the progress with the house is more tangible, and other times it goes as quickly as drying mud...drywall mud that is.

Although I don't have any recent photos, the walls are finished.  Next week when the drywall contractor returns from vacation, we should get the ceiling completed.  Yep, add contractor's vacation to the list of delays.  I am so very ready to move to the next phase!  (insert exasperated expression)

Our kitchen cabinets were delivered on time!  But because of the drywall delays, they are sitting in our basement.

All of the little trim details of the exterior were completed this week.  Our front porch has a ceiling. Our sidewalk got the needed repairs.  And I painted the front door.  I am really happy with the quaint exterior!

Drywall Woes

I've often said that we combined all of the frustrations of a new build with all of the problems of a renovation!  These past two weeks have been nothing but problems and frustration about the drywall.

First, the original drywall subcontractor fell through.  Our contractor had checked with the subcontractor on a Friday to confirm they were starting Monday.  They confirmed, but then on Monday didn't show. When our contractor called on Monday morning, they said they couldn't do it.

Woe...Woe...Woe!

So our contractor found someone to start a week later: this past Monday.
(I recognize that finding a good subcontractor on such short notice and on budget is a gift from God!)
Drywall was delivered last Friday. The new drywall subcontractor got to work first thing Monday morning.  Halfway through the day on Tuesday, he realized that some of the drywall was crumbling and falling apart. We apparently received a defective product.  Today 61 sheets of hung drywall were torn down and replaced.  The supplier is replacing the product, so this isn't a hit to the budget, just the timeline.

We are grateful that the subcontractor realized the problem and is taking the steps to make sure everything is right.  But still...

Woe!

Next time you watch HGTV and see the dramatized problem that gets quickly resolved, know that is only a small glimpse at how it really goes down.

Keepin' it real.

Front Door

We have our front door!  I may have squealed a little this afternoon when I saw it!

It only took an extra 3 weeks longer than we planned, not to blame any big box stores that rhyme with "Slowes."

I plan to paint the door the same green as the siding and the sidelight trim white.    Here is the interior view.  

 

The insulation is also completed.  Drywall next week.
